Cleaning laminate wooden floors is simple. First step is to clean the surface with a soft broom. Once it is free from dust, then use a damp mop.

Because of personal preferences you may mix a little alkaline floor disinfectant cleaner with or without fragrance to the water as well. Just make sure the mop is well rung i.e free of water droplets.

Here are the basic things you will need to clean your wooden laminate floors:

  1. Mop (any type)
  2. Water
  3. Alkaline based floor cleaner
  4. Dry cloth

It is very important to mop the floor along the direction of the planks. It is better move the mop over the vertical length of the floor specially incase the floor has prominent wood grains or has a dark tone.

If you move the mop horizontally over the vertical planks, chances are you will be able to see the damp mop marks after the floor dries out.

Incase your floor has a gloss surface and is ‘made in China’, damp mop is not for you. ‘DRY MOP ONLY’.  Every floor packaging has a manufacturer’s installation guide inlay.

If you carefully read it, it will tell you whether your floor can resist moisture from a damp mop or should you use dry mop on it.

Floor cleaning

It is helpful to know what kind of wooden floor you have installed. HDF-E1 floor boards are usually moisture resistant but not MDF based floors.

For that reason it is essential to look at the floor labels in the packet. Don’t rely on just the retailer information as this will assure the life of your floor.

Laminate floor surface has a transparent protective layer. This prevents stains etc to penetrate and damage the décor layer. If you need to get rid of a stain, for example a mark from a paint brush or dried coffee stain, you may rub the effected surface with a warm wet cloth and get rid of it.

Incase the stain proves to be a little stubborn, apply nail polish remover or thinner on a dry washcloth and rub it off. Never pour the thinner on the surface.

This is probably the most asked question by our clients and rightly so, they want their floors to look their best at all times.

Caution: For Hardwood or Engineered floors, never apply any chemicals or stain removers as this will damage the surface polish. Incase of floor surfaces without the protective layer as that of Laminate flooring, contact a floor professional near you.
